HZJO
The Hannes Zerbe Jazz Orchester Berlin is an unconventional big band that has been active since 2011. Musicians who are well-known in the Berlin and international jazz scene play under the direction of Hannes Zerbe, who is regarded as the founding father of jazz in the German Democratic Republic. He composes and arranges the music for the orchestra, which carries influences ranging from modern jazz to symphonic music, as well as Frank Zappa. One of the main goals is the band’s interplay, which creates a unified sonic experience. Equally important, however, are the individual and creative opportunities for each musician. Through intricate improvisations, they are able to showcase their full diversity and artistic potential.
